The week long trip provided the delegates with the unique opportunity to talk to UK businesses who are benefiting from industrial ecology based solution through ISL’s flagship project the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP).
Visiting the UK’s largest animal by-product recycler and long standing NISP member, John Pointon & Sons Ltd, representatives from the US BCSD learnt how meat and bone meal from cattle is recovered and reused as a substitute for virgin materials in the production of cement.
Martin Pointon, Joint Managing Director of John Pointon & Sons, said: “Working with ISL has proved vital to the company’s ongoing commercial development as it provides both innovative thinking, opportunities and solutions to a far greater extent than any other organisation that we’ve engaged with.”
The visit further established links between the US and UK in a bid to develop a collaborative platform to meet the future challenges of building a worldwide sustainable economy.
