The National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) has been awarded the sum to continue to deliver one of the country’s leading business opportunity programmes.

NISP is the only industrial symbiosis programme which operates at a national level, and the continuation of funding from the government will see the programme carry on to deliver economic, environmental and social benefits across the length and breadth of the country.

Managing Director of ISL and NISP Programme Director, Peter Laybourn, said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in NISP for their hard work and commitment over the last three years.

“I am immensely proud of the efforts made by our industry members and staff to contribute towards the success we’ve achieved and of the programme’s ability to deliver exceptional economic and environmental results.”

NISP has also been asked by Defra to participate in a forthcoming delivery landscape review. This presents a great opportunity for NISP to continue to work alongside other established arms length delivery bodies to meet Defra’s key waste and environmental policy objectives.

Since April 2005 NISP has delivered exceptional economic and environmental results achieving above and beyond the targets set by Defra. These include:

•    diverting 2.95 million tonnes of business waste from landfill
•    generating £119 million in sales revenue for its members
•    reducing carbon emissions by 2.9 million tonnes
•    saving companies more than £97 million
•    creating and safeguarding 1425 jobs
•    attracting over £75.1 million in private investment
•    eliminating 338,000 tonnes of hazardous waste
•    saving 5.24 million tonnes of virgin material being used in the UK
•    saving over 2.54 million tonnes of potable water
