Proven Methodology Ready for Europe-wide Implementation

International Synergies Limited, the world’s leading expert in applied industrial symbiosis, showcases its proven methodology for improving the resource efficiency and productivity of industry at this year’s Green Week and calls for Europe-wide implementation to support the European Commission’s ‘Roadmap to a Resource Efficient Europe.’

International Synergies devises and manages industrial symbiosis projects around the world as well as training in-country partners to deliver and develop their own programmes.  The company has to date assisted in the set up and implementation of industrial symbiosis projects in the UK, Romania, Hungary, United States, China, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, South Africa and Slovakia.

Currently its most well known project is the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme  (NISP) being employed in the UK.  NISP has been operating since 2005 using its innovative network of more than 14,000 businesses to identify and facilitate profitable transactions between companies.

Through NISP and its other projects, International Synergies has developed a tried and tested methodology for the practical implementation of industrial symbiosis that can be applied at regional, multi-regional or national level.  Over the last seven years, and with input from industrial symbiosis practitioners from around the world, the company has developed a range of systems, tools and techniques to support regions and countries in establishing their own programmes.

Peter Laybourn, Chief Executive of International Synergies, said: “I am delighted  to speak at Green Week for the third consecutive year.  I look forward to generating support for the European-wide implementation of the industrial symbiosis approach, which now has a six -year evidence base and is being replicated in at least ten countries worldwide including within Europe in Romania, Hungary Slovakia and the UK.

A report commissioned by DG Environment and set to be published in the next few weeks provides an economic analysis of resource efficiency policies.  The report has given   International Synergies’ NISP the maximum possible score based on economic and environmental benefits in a study that looked at 120 policies from 23 countries.

The report also presents compelling evidence to support European-wide replication of NISP stating, ‘NISP shows high potential for improving resource efficiency, and the programme could be successfully replicated in every EU Member State. It further states that an EU wide network has the potential to be even more successful than the English network has been to date and concludes that replicating the NISP programme approach across Europe would result in huge economic and environmental gains.
