Industrial Symbiosis as an Innovative Method in Tackling Climate Change
| Partners: | International Synergies, The Public Foundation for the Progress of Industry (IFKA) |
| Funders: | European Commission (EC) through its LIFE+ programme |
| Project Dates: | February 2010 - December 2012 |
Summary
International Synergies is working with IFKA to introduce industrial symbiosis to the Kozep-Magyarororszag region (including Budapest) by supporting an in-country delivery team to deliver a pilot programme, with the potential to expand nationally.
Funded through the EC's LIFE+ programme, the project aims to use industrial symbiosis to decrease the impact of industry on the environment.
International Synergies provides support to the project in terms of the delivery and management of an industrial symbiosis programme including SYNERGie, International Synergies' proprietary synergy management software, that enables the in-country team to identify synergies and manage them through to completion.
A number of visits to Hungary have occurred, involving activities such as delivery of workshops and site visits to companies to help identify and progress synergies. In addition the in-country team have been given ongoing support as the project has progressed and new areas of synergy management are required.
In the future IFKA plans to select a number of members to visit the UK and learn from UK members of NISP about successful synergies and to share best practice.
Impact
Synergies are continuing to be indentified and completed by the in-country team and the industry membership of the project is beginning to grow.
Following on from the project commencing, IFKA have been successful in applying for funding to create the worlds first cross border pilot programme with Slovakia; providing further evidence that industrial symbiosis isn't constrained by regional or national boundaries.
