SIC-15 Sector Organic Arisings in Scotland

SIC-15 Sector Organic Arisings in Scotland

Partners: International Synergies, Caledonian Centre for the Environment (part of Glasgow Caledonian University)
Funders: Scottish Enterprise and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme)
Project Dates: January 2010 to September 2010

Summary
International Synergies was commissioned by the Scottish Enterprise and WRAP to identify the levels of 'by-products generated through the food & drink manufacturing process that could be used as feedstocks into anaerobic digester plants in Scotland.

Impact
International Synergies completed extensive surveys and analysis to ascertain the quantity of waste material or by-products generated at food and drink sites, and how these arisings related to the sites' energy demand. A key finding of the project concluded that less than 1% of over 2 million tonnes of total solid and liquid by-products throughout Scotland (excluding the whisky sector) were being landfilled. As a result of this project, alternative options are now being used, and this project clearly quantified the use of these non-landfill options for key sub-sectors in the food and drink industry.
