Peter Laybourn

Chairman and Founder

Founder of International Synergies Limited (ISL) and creator of the flagship National Industrial Symbiosis Programme.  Peter has helped to establish similar projects in over 50 countries. Degree in Economics and Ecology, 2nd degree in Marine Environmental Management and an Honorary Masters.

Peter’s first career was in the aerospace industry as Contracts and Commercial Manager at GEC Marconi, Smiths Industries and Meggitt Aviation. After completing his second degree he became Local Agenda 21 Coordinator at Stratford-on-Avon District Council and then went on to join Shell Better Britain Campaign.  He established the UK Business Council for Sustainable Development in 2002 (Deputy Chief Executive for four years) before leaving to form ISL.

Peter’s awards include ‘Sustainability Leader of the Year’ and Birmingham’s Lord Mayor’s Award for outstanding contribution to the city.  He has provided expert evidence to the House of Lords, House of Commons and the European Commission leading to the inclusion of industrial symbiosis in European policy. In 2015, under his stewardship ISL organised and delivered the G7 workshop on industrial symbiosis alongside on behalf of the German presidency.

Peter has recently been Chair of the UK Manufacturing Symbiosis Network Plus Advisory Board, Chief Technical Advisor on industrial symbiosis to UNDP and on the board of the Anant Centre for Sustainability in India.
